Fireproofing, also called passive fire protection, is a coating or treatment that slows the spread of fire and keeps structural elements such as steel from failing for a set time. It buys occupants time to leave and gives firefighters time to work. In the UAE, the fire rating a building needs is set by the Civil Defence requirements for that building type.
Fireproofing usually means coatings such as intumescent paint or cementitious spray that protect structural steel and concrete for a rated period, for example 60 or 120 minutes. Fire retardant treatment is applied to materials that burn, such as wood, fabric and cables, to slow ignition and flame spread. The right choice depends on the material and the rating required.
Fire treatment is a general term for applying a fire retardant or fireproof coating to a surface to improve its fire performance. It covers treating timber, curtains and upholstery, cables, walls and structural steel. Evora recommends the product after seeing the surface and the rating you need.
Intumescent coating is a thin paint that swells into a thick insulating char when heated. The char keeps the steel underneath cooler for longer, so it keeps its strength. It is widely used on structural steel in commercial and industrial buildings.
Intumescent coatings typically last 10 to 15 years, and in good conditions some systems last up to 20 years. Periodic inspection and maintenance are needed to keep the coating performing as designed.
Cementitious fireproofing is a spray-applied cement-based coating. It is often used on structural steel, decks and concrete where a thicker, durable layer is acceptable, such as plant rooms, car parks and industrial buildings. It is usually chosen when the surface will not be on show.
Yes. Fire retardant treatments for timber, curtains, upholstery and other fabrics reduce how easily they ignite and how fast flame spreads. Results depend on the material and the treatment used, and fabrics may need re-treatment after washing or cleaning.
Yes. Fire retardant cable coating is applied to cables to slow flame spread along cable runs in buildings, tunnels and plant rooms.
