Thatched roofs are combustible, so fire protection matters. This guide covers the main options. See our fire retardant thatching page.
Common causes of thatch fires
- Chimney-related fires.
- Electrical issues.
- Lightning.
- Cigarettes and other fire sources.
Ways to protect thatch
- Thatch batts: fire-resistant slabs installed under the roof that slow the spread of fire and add thermal and acoustic insulation.
- Aluminum barrier foil.
- Fire retardant spray made for thatched roofs.
Combining methods
Thatch batts used with aluminum barrier foil or fire retardant spray provide more complete protection than any one method alone.

FAQ
Is a thatched roof more likely to catch fire?
Our guide notes that thatched structures are no more likely to catch fire than other roofs, but preventing fires matters because thatch is combustible.
How thatch fire retardant treatment works
Thatch, palm leaf and other natural roofing burns quickly once it catches. A fire retardant is sprayed onto the thatch so it soaks into the material. The treatment is meant to make the thatch harder to ignite and to slow the spread of flame.
Sun, wind and rain affect how long the protection lasts, so thatch should be inspected and re-treated as advised for your site.
