“Fireproof coating” covers several different products. This guide explains the main types and where each one is used.
Intumescent coating
A thin film that swells when heated and insulates the steel under it. It keeps a clean painted finish, so it suits steel that stays visible. See intumescent coating.
Cementitious coating
A cement-based layer sprayed onto steel. It is used where steel is hidden behind ceilings and walls, such as warehouses and car parks. See cementitious coating.
Fire retardant paint and coatings
These slow ignition and flame spread on walls, ceilings, wood and other surfaces. See fire rated paint and fire retardant coatings.
Cable coating
A coating applied to electrical cables to slow flame spread along them. See cable coating.
Which one do I need?
- Structural steel that must keep standing: intumescent or cementitious.
- Walls, ceilings and interiors: fire retardant or fire rated paint.
- Cables: cable coating.
- Wood, fabric, thatch: fire retardant treatment.
No coating makes a material fully fireproof. Each one slows heat or flame for a set time.
