Cementitious fire proofing is a passive fire protection system applied to steel structures. This guide covers what it is and the main types. More detail is on our cementitious fire proofing page.
What is cementitious fire proofing?
Cementitious fire proofing uses spray-applied fire resistive materials (SFRM) applied directly to steel structures to insulate them against high temperatures. The material has a gypsum or Portland cement binder, usually supplied as a powder that is mixed with water before spraying.
Where it is used
It is mostly applied to structural steel such as joists, beams and columns. Applied in multiple layers, it can significantly increase the fire resistance of structural steel. It is not suitable for high-moisture areas, because moisture trapped between the substrate and the coating can cause corrosion of the substrate.
The three types
- Standard density: suited to places with minimal exposure to extreme weather or environmental conditions. It is non-combustible and prevents smoke and flames from spreading.
- Medium density: more durable, with a higher bond strength, suited to spaces with more moisture or exposure to the elements.
- High density: suited to industrial applications and extreme environments.

FAQ
What is the difference between cementitious fire proofing and intumescent paint?
Cementitious fire proofing is a spray-applied, cement-based layer used where a thicker layer is acceptable. Intumescent paint is a thin coating that swells into an insulating char when heated. See our intumescent coating page.
Can cementitious fire proofing be used in wet areas?
No. It is not suitable for high-moisture areas because trapped moisture can corrode the substrate.
How cementitious fire proofing is applied
Cementitious fire proofing slows heat reaching the steel, so the structure keeps its strength for the rated period.
- We review the steel or concrete, the fire rating and the access.
- We prepare and protect the surrounding area and the surface.
- We spray the cementitious fire proofing to the required thickness.
- We inspect the finished work before handover.
