Structural Steel Fireproofing: Options Explained

Structural steel fireproofing keeps beams and columns strong for longer in a fire. This guide compares the two main options. See our fire proofing page for the full range.

Why steel needs protection

Steel loses roughly half of its strength at around 550 to 600 degrees Celsius, and building fires can exceed this. Fireproofing slows the temperature rise so the structure keeps its strength for the rated period.

Option 1: intumescent paint

A thin coating that swells into an insulating char when heated. It does not change the mechanical properties of the steel and can protect a steel frame for up to 120 minutes. Read about intumescent coating.

Option 2: cementitious fire proofing

A spray-applied, cement-based layer used on joists, beams and columns where a thicker layer is acceptable. It is not suitable for high-moisture areas. Read about cementitious fire proofing.

FAQ

Which is better for steel?

It depends on the substrate, the required fire rating and the space. We recommend the system per element after reviewing drawings or the site.

What decides the system for structural steel

Intumescent paint gives a thin, neat finish for visible steel. Cementitious fire proofing is a thicker sprayed layer, often used where steel is hidden. Which one fits depends on the project.

  • The fire rating required, commonly expressed in minutes of resistance
  • The steel section size and the loading
  • Indoor or outdoor exposure
  • The finish and colour required

Neither is better everywhere. It depends on the rating, the section and the finish. We recommend a system after reviewing your project.
