What is passive fire protection?
Passive fire protection, also called fireproofing, is a coating or treatment that slows the spread of fire and keeps structural elements such as steel from failing for a set time. It gives occupants time to leave and gives firefighters time to work.
Systems it includes
- Intumescent paint for structural steel.
- Cementitious fire proofing for steel and concrete.
- Cable coating for electrical and data cables.
- Fire retardant treatment for wood, fabric, plastic and wallpaper.
What to check
Civil Defence approval, experience in the UAE, a system recommended per element, and a clear process from review to inspection and handover.
