Fire retardant coating, fire protection coating and fire proof coating are terms often used for the same goal: slowing fire and protecting what is underneath. This guide shows which Evora system fits which surface. Start with our fire proofing page.
Which coating for which surface
- Exposed structural steel: intumescent paint.
- Steel and concrete where a thicker layer is acceptable: cementitious fire proofing.
- Cable runs and trays: fire retardant cable coating.
- Walls and ceilings: fire rated paint.
- Wood, fabric, plastic and wallpaper: fire retardant treatment.
What coatings can and cannot do
These coatings lower flammability and slow the spread of fire. They do not prevent fires. The right choice depends on the substrate and the required fire rating.

FAQ
Are fire proof coating and fire retardant coating the same?
The terms overlap. In practice the system is chosen by the surface and the required fire rating.
Who decides the right coating?
We review drawings or the site, check the substrate and the required fire rating, and recommend a system for each element.
Fire retardant coating or fire protection coating?
Fire retardant coating is applied to materials that burn, such as wood, fabric and wallpaper, to slow ignition and flame spread. Fire protection coating protects structural elements such as steel for a rated time, using intumescent paint or cementitious fire proofing.
