Fire retardant spray lowers the flammability of curtains and fabrics. This guide covers how it works and what it suits. See our fabric fire retardant spray page.
How fabric fire retardant spray works
The spray creates a protective barrier on the fabric surface. When exposed to heat or flames, its chemicals form a char layer that insulates the layer underneath, and non-flammable gases are released that lower the oxygen around the fabric. Once dry, the fabric keeps its natural appearance.
What it suits
It works on natural and synthetic absorbent materials, including curtains, soft furnishings and decorations, as well as paper, foam, cardboard and hessian. It is used in places such as schools, homes, public buildings and theaters.
Limits to know
It is not suited to materials with a water-resistant coating or to non-absorbent materials. Effectiveness diminishes over time, especially if the fabric gets wet, so periodic reapplication is recommended. Application is best left to professionals.
