Wood is combustible, so fire retardant paint and treatment for wood are common safety measures. This guide explains how they work. See our fire retardant wood page.
How wood fire retardant paint works
The paint is a reactive paint. Above about 120 degrees Celsius, the phosphorus or nitrogen compounds in it react with oxygen and water vapor to form an insulating foam. This foam can swell up to about 50 times the thickness of the initial coating and form a char, which slows the charring of the wood and increases the burn-through time, giving people time to leave.
Application
Wood fire retardant paint suits indoor and outdoor use and can be applied by brush, roller or spray gun.
What it does not do
It does not prevent fires from starting. It delays the rapid spread of fire.
