Fire Retardant Cable Coating: Protecting Cables in a Fire

Intumescent cable coating helps delay the spread of fire and heat along electrical and data cables. See our cable coating page.

How it works

The coating is applied directly to cables. In a fire it undergoes a chemical reaction and expands into a charred, insulating layer. This reduces heat transfer to the cable core and gives physical protection against direct flame and fire spread along the cable length.

Where it is used

  • Commercial buildings such as offices and malls.
  • Industrial facilities such as factories and warehouses.
  • Residential buildings.
  • Transportation systems such as subways, trains and airports.

FAQ

Does cable coating stop a fire?

No. It delays the spread of fire and heat along cables.

Where fire retardant cable coating is used

Burning cable insulation can carry fire from room to room, so a coating on the cable run helps limit it. Cable coating suits cables that stay in place.

  • Cable trays and risers in commercial and industrial buildings
  • Plant rooms, switch rooms and substations
  • Tunnels, car parks and service shafts

More questions
