Fire Rated Coating in Dubai and the UAE: Types and Where to Use Them

A fire rated coating protects a building element from fire for a set period. This guide explains the main types used in Dubai and across the UAE and where each one fits.

Fire rated coating for structural steel

Steel beams and columns are protected with intumescent paint when the steel stays exposed, or with cementitious fire proofing when it will be hidden or finished later. Evora uses Carboline and Hempel products, listed on our product reference page.

Fire rated paint for other surfaces

For walls, wood and other building surfaces see our fire rated paint page, and for materials such as wood and fabric see fire retardant treatment.

How to choose

The right coating depends on the material, whether it is exposed, and the fire rating the project requires. Compare the options in intumescent vs cementitious fireproofing and read about passive fire protection.

Fire rated coating FAQ

What is a fire rated coating?

A fire rated coating is a protective coating applied to a surface so that it resists fire for a stated period. The rating that applies depends on the product, the thickness and the element being protected, so it is confirmed from the manufacturer data sheet for the project.

Is a fire rated coating the same as intumescent paint?

Intumescent paint is one kind of fire rated coating. It is a thin coating that swells into an insulating char when heated and is mainly used on exposed structural steel. See our intumescent paint page.

What other fire rated coating options are there?

Cementitious coating is a thicker cement-based spray for concealed steel and concrete, and fire retardant coatings are used on wood, fabric and other surfaces. See cementitious coating and fire retardant.
