The two names sound alike, but they protect different things.
Intumescent paint
Intumescent paint protects structural steel. When heated it swells into an insulating layer that slows heat reaching the steel. See intumescent coating.
Fire retardant paint
Fire retardant paint is used on walls, ceilings and other surfaces to slow ignition and flame spread. See fire rated paint.
Quick comparison
- Steel beams and columns: intumescent paint.
- Walls and ceilings: fire retardant paint.
- Wood, fabric and thatch: fire retardant treatment, see fire retardant services.
Can I use one in place of the other?
No. Each is made for a different job, and the specification for your building usually names which one is needed. Ask your consultant or contact us for advice.
