Fire retardant paint is a passive measure that slows the spread of fire on surfaces. This guide explains how it works and where it is used. Read more on our fire retardant paint page.
How fire retardant paint works
A fire needs oxygen, fuel and heat. Fire retardant paint works by disrupting this fire triangle. When exposed to heat, the phosphorus or nitrogen compounds in the paint react with oxygen and water vapor to form an insulating foam, which delays the spread of flames and reduces the flammability of the material.
Where it can be applied
Fire retardant paint can be applied to plywood, steel and other metals, furniture, doors and lacquered surfaces. It suits indoor and outdoor use, and can be applied with a spray gun, brush or roller.
What it does and does not do
It reduces flammability and delays fire spread, which gives occupants more time to evacuate. It does not prevent fires from starting.
