Intumescent paint is a fire protection coating for structural steel. It looks like paint, but when it is heated in a fire it swells into a thick insulating layer.
How intumescent paint works
Steel loses strength as it heats. Intumescent paint swells when the temperature rises and forms a layer that slows the heat reaching the steel. This gives the structure more time to stay standing. See our intumescent coating service.
Where intumescent paint is used
- Exposed steel beams and columns that need a neat finish
- Showrooms, atriums and commercial buildings
- Steel that must keep a painted look
Intumescent or cementitious?
Intumescent paint suits steel that stays visible. Cementitious fireproofing is a thicker sprayed layer used where steel is hidden. Read intumescent vs cementitious fireproofing.
Fire resistance period
Steel is protected for a required period, commonly 60, 90 or 120 minutes. The period depends on the building and its fire strategy. See fire proofing for steel structures.
